When Homer wrote about “the wine-dark sea”, thousands of years ago, he referred to the same part of the Eastern Mediterranean which throughout history has been a naval battleground. Yet today history and geography converge once again with Turkey and its arch-rival Greece clash over gas reserves hidden underneath, and with regional powers such as Israel and Egypt siding with Athens against Ankara.
